Lifeboat Station

 

The RNLI Lifeboat at Newhaven is never inactive for long.

For generations local residents were used to hearing the sound of two maroons fired in quick succession announcing a new emergency launching but this has given way to more sophisticated means of communication.

It takes very few minutes for the crew to assemble and have the boat accelerating out of the harbour heading towards whatever problem awaits their attention.

Phase 1 of the West Quay development plan included provision for a new site for the Lifeboat Station.  This move took place in June 2004. The purpose built modern premises are much larger and look very grand by comparison with the former portakabin home located a short distance away, which although primitive, had housed the organisation for many years.  The new and old stations are pictured below ............
