Iceland - Part 7

Part Seven Skaftafell to Hella

We were now approaching the end of our Icelandic circuit moving on to Hella located some way inland at about seven o'clock. Here we were again to have a two night stay of two nights. We would pass the bird sanctuary at Dyrholaey with its cliff nesting sites for puffins and many other seabirds

We had a considerable problem reaching the site as a minibus had slipped a rear wheel off the side of the narrow track and become completely stuck, blocking the road in both directions. Our free day turned out to be by far our hottest day, temperatures reaching 25 centigrade.  We even had an ice-cream.

We took a long circuit around the Reykjanes peninsula and discovered a small geothermal site being newly opened up.

Youngsters on the long summer school vacation were working diligently laying pathways around the area and were keen to talk to us and practice their English.

All the ones we spoke to planned to spend a year or more in England or mainland Europe for experience before returning to Iceland to live
